Where it all began

The Marri Hanna olive grove began when John, a retired Paediatrician planted the first trees in 2002. The 100-hectare property is set in the beautiful Mudgee region of NSW which is a productive area for olive growing, vineyards and agriculture. Full of life, the property is home to wildlife and to a small herd of Angus and Hereford beef cattle and Dorper sheep. The Green Gold name was given to represent the lush green leaves of the olive tree and the beautiful golden olive oil that is created.

The process

The process

We usually harvest the olives in early autumn to give that peppery taste to the oil. Harvest is a very busy time but can be a lot of fun when you have family and friends there to help out. The olives are then cold-pressed at a local press within 24 hours of harvesting. The extra virgin olive oil is then stored in air-tight stainless steel containers to allow the organic matter to settle (Connoisseurs of olive oil do prefer just pressed and fresh oil with the organic matter). No chemicals are used to filter, we believe in keeping the extra virgin olive oil completely pure so that you can enjoy the full spectrum of health benefits of adding it to your diet. The result is an absolutely delicious extra virgin olive oil, with a light and peppery flavour profile that is the perfect addition to most meals!

The environment

We are conscious of our impact on the environment and strive to grow healthy olive trees with minimal chemical inputs. We only use organic fertilisers, and we return pruning’s as mulch which helps to retain moisture and build healthy soil. We love that the grove is home to all types of creatures, big and small. There are Cockatoos, White-winged Choughs, Willie-wagtails, Kangaroos and Bearded Dragons, just to name a few. Animals are great to have in the grove, they naturally control pest insects, and they fertilise the ground as they go.

When we acquired the property over 20 years ago, the land was mostly cleared for agriculture. Since then, we have planted over 3,000 native plants and trees throughout the property. Australian native plants provide habitat for native animals, attract pollinators, and help build resilience against drought and harsh climate conditions. We have also set aside 5 acres of land which we do not graze or cultivate. It is simply left to naturally regenerate and is a home for the kangaroos and other wildlife as well as native grasses and plants. We are committed to continuing this revegetation work and it’s something we really enjoy, seeing bare paddocks transformed and planted trees growing tall.

A diversity of animals are great to have in the grove, they naturally control pest insects, and they fertilise the ground as they go.
